Longmont political organizer Katie Wallace has been appointed to fill the vacant state Senate District 17 seat left open after the resignation of former state Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis. Wallace, a renter from Longmont, won the vote of a vacancy committee composed of Democratic party members. She emphasized her grandfather’s experience fleeing fascism in Poland as a source of inspiration for seeking public office. Jaquez Lewis resigned amidst allegations of mistreating her aides and is under investigation by district attorneys.
Wallace’s background includes grassroots organizing, federal policy work for Rep. Joe Neguse, and campaign management for local politicians. She emphasized her experience and endorsements, including that of the Sierra Club. Other candidates who competed for the seat included Andrew Barton, Justin Brooks, Kathy Hagen, Julie Marshall, Peter Salas, Martha Wilson, and Shiquita Yarbrough. Despite tough competition, Wallace secured about 59% of the committee’s vote, outperforming her opponents.
