Colorado plans to ask CPW to exempt gun owners from certain regulations

A contentious gun bill in the 2025 legislative session is set to include an amendment that would allow gun owners to be exempt from certain firearm prohibitions. Senate Bill 003, sponsored by a group of Democratic lawmakers, passed through the Senate with exemptions for individuals who receive hunter education training courses certified by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The bill aims to prohibit the sale and purchase of certain firearms, but amendments have been made to allow for exemptions and ownership eligibility cards issued by CPW. Applicants will need to submit personal information, government ID, and pass a background check. The money earned from application fees will go to the Firearm Training and Safety Course Cash Fund. The sponsors hope these amendments will gain support from Governor Jared Polis, who has expressed the need for exemptions for hunters and sport shooters. Critics argue that the bill goes beyond enforcing existing laws and could be seen as a de facto ban on “assault” weapons. The bill now heads to a House committee where it is expected to be a long night of testimony. Testimony will begin upon adjournment and is planned to conclude at 10 p.m. The amendments seek to find a balance between gun control measures and the rights of gun owners in Colorado.
