You have the power to update the Gulf of America on MapQuest. Here’s how.

Google, Apple, and Bing Maps have changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America following an executive order from President Trump. MapQuest has not updated its map to reflect the change but is allowing users to rename the gulf to whatever they want. This move by MapQuest appears to be a joke aimed at poking fun at Trump’s order. Some U.S. citizens have welcomed the name change, while others, including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, are unhappy with it and have threatened legal action. Google changed the name to adhere to official government names, citing the Geographic Names Information System as their source. MapQuest, on the other hand, has chosen to retain the Gulf of Mexico name due to outdated maps, but users can use a site to give the gulf a new name for fun. Some social media users have given creative names to the gulf including “Gulf of Fragile Masculinity” and “Gulf of $7 Eggs.” MapQuest is a free online mapping and navigation service that was one of the earliest of its kind. Users could enter destinations and receive printed out directions before voice navigation software was widely available. The MapQuest app is available for Apple iPhone and Google Android users.
