On Christmas Day, Russia conducted a “inhuman” assault on Ukraine’s energy system and cities using cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as drones, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attacks resulted in injuries in Kharkiv and a fatality in Dnipropetrovsk, leaving half a million people without heating and causing blackouts. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the strike successfully targeted critical energy facilities supporting Kyiv’s military-industrial complex. Ukraine’s military reported downing 59 missiles and 54 drones. This attack, on Ukraine’s second Christmas under the independent Orthodox Church, intensified Russian aggression against the Ukrainian energy sector. The Dnipro region’s power system was particularly targeted, with significant damage to power equipment and generating facilities. Ukraine is calling on its allies to provide air defense ammunition to protect its essential energy infrastructure. The U.S. ambassador to Ukraine condemned the assault as a “state-sponsored terrorism” and criticized Russia for “weaponizing winter.” The ongoing conflict has caused significant damage and casualties, highlighting the need for international support to prevent further escalations.
