Press Release: Wildfires in Northwest Colorado Prompt Evacuations
Meeker, Colorado – A significant wildfire outbreak near Meeker has seen rapid expansion, with the Lee Fire and Grease Fire combined now affecting around 5,000 acres. Initially sparked by lightning during recent thunderstorms, the fires are fueled by dry conditions and dense vegetation, resulting in a swift escalation in the area.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency on Sunday in response to the Elk Fire, located approximately 10 miles southeast of Meeker. The Bureau of Land Management reports the loss of one structure and four outbuildings due to the fire’s aggressive growth. An evacuation site for those affected has been established at 200 Main Street in Meeker.
Evacuations are underway for residents near the Elk Fire, specifically along County Road 8 (mile markers 11-16), Sleepy Cat to Lake Avery, and sections of County Road 40, among others. Pre-evacuation notices have also been issued for nearby areas, urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared to evacuate if conditions worsen.
Similarly, evacuation orders are in effect for areas surrounding the Lee Fire, including County Road 22, Little Hills off County Road 5, and along Highway 64. Pre-evacuation alerts extend through several other local roads.
Authorities have closed various roads in Rio Blanco County to facilitate firefighting efforts, including sections of County Roads 3, 8, and 76. As fire crews continue to combat these wildfires, residents are advised to stay informed and follow directives from emergency services.
For ongoing updates, follow local media and official announcements. Residents are encouraged to prioritize safety and heed evacuation orders to ensure their well-being as firefighting efforts proceed.
