Starmer’s Recognition of Palestinian State a Historic Move, Says Ambassador
The Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, hailed Sir Keir Starmer’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state as a “historic, legal, and democratic gesture.” In an interview with Sky News, Zomlot emphasized the significance of this step, particularly given Britain’s historical role in the plight of Palestinians since the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which signaled support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
Zomlot expressed gratitude on behalf of the Palestinian people, asserting that this recognition represents not just a symbolic act, but one imbued with moral weight. He described it as the “starting gun” for establishing a Palestinian state, urging for the cessation of Israeli settlements on Palestinian land and calling for international law and accountability regarding Israel’s actions.
Addressing the complex issue of governance in Gaza, Zomlot argued that security is the “fruit of peace,” rather than a precondition. He pointed out that the key obstacle to Palestinian governance in Gaza is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He suggested that a unified Palestinian state—both geographically and politically—could effectively govern the region, eliminating the presence of Hamas.
Zomlot underscored the necessity of addressing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, asserting that true security will remain out of reach as long as these rights are unfulfilled. He condemned Israel’s ongoing violence and humanitarian impacts, reaffirming that such actions will not undermine the Palestinians’ rights to statehood and dignity.
As discussions continue, many are watching closely to see how Starmer’s proposed recognition will influence the trajectory of peace and justice in the region.
