Why Does Do Ho Suh Continuously Recreate His Childhood Home?

Do Ho Suh’s Artistic Journey: A Tapestry of Memory and Space

In the heart of Islington, London, renowned artist Do Ho Suh has forged a unique creative landscape within a Victorian warehouse. His studio is a maze of vibrant colors and textures, showcasing his intricate sculptures and “thread drawings” that explore the concept of home through the lens of memory.

Suh’s oeuvre is a reflection of his diverse experiences living in cities like Seoul, New York, and Berlin. Notable works such as “Home Within Home Within Home” (2013) intricately layer his past, encapsulating his childhood home in Seoul within a replica of his Providence townhouse. His sculptures, composed of gauzy fabric, capture both the fragility and permanence of places left behind.

In preparation for his major exhibition at Tate Modern, opening soon, Suh presents "Nest/s" (2024), a series of interconnected fabric rooms that invite visitors to traverse through his memories. This immersive experience aligns with Suh’s belief in making personal spaces public, allowing audiences to engage with his narrative.

Suh’s artistic journey began at Seoul National University, evolving from traditional painting to three-dimensional forms through studies at prestigious institutions like Yale. His first true-to-scale work, created in 1999, was a silk replica of his childhood home, embodying the concept of transitory spaces that shape identity.

Suh’s practice embodies a democratic studio environment, with a team of young professionals who contribute their expertise. As he explains, “I make highly personal spaces public,” transforming the intimate act of home-making into an accessible experience for all.

As he prepares for the upcoming exhibition, Suh remains introspective, reflecting on the intersections of memory, identity, and space, the essence of his artistic vision.
