Lakewood Residents Voice Concerns Over Future Homeless Services at Former School Property
Lakewood, CO – The Lakewood City Council’s decision to purchase the vacant Emory Elementary School property for $4 million has sparked concern among local residents. During a recent council meeting, officials announced plans to divide the 17-acre site into two parcels, with the 10-acre section housing the school building earmarked for potential services aimed at supporting homeless and low-income families.
Travis Parker, the city’s chief of sustainability and community development, stated that while no specific users have been confirmed, there are discussions with The Action Center, a nonprofit providing vital services such as food, clothing, and community programs. Laurie Walowitz, the organization’s chief impact officer, emphasized that establishing a location at Emory would allow them to expand their services significantly, addressing a variety of community needs, including health care and workforce development.
Despite the council’s assurances that the site would not serve as a homeless shelter, residents expressed fears about safety and increased homelessness at the location. Caroline Pardoe, a local parent, shared her apprehension, voicing concerns for her family’s safety. Other residents pointed out that the area lacks easy public transportation access, complicating the arrival of individuals in need of services.
While some community members support the initiative, arguing it prevents homelessness by providing essential services, worries persist about the impact on local safety and crime rates. Notably, a point-in-time count revealed that 330 homeless individuals were identified in the city, raising further questions about the suitability of the Emory location.
As the city prepares for public meetings to discuss the project’s future, council members highlight the importance of providing supportive services to vulnerable community members, urging residents to consider the long-term benefits for families in need.
