Press Release: Humanitarian Crisis Intensifies as Gaza Airstrikes Continue
At least 35 Palestinians were killed and over 100 injured on Wednesday as Israel intensified its airstrikes across the Gaza Strip. The most recent attacks, which targeted residential areas in the Nuseirat refugee camp, resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, including children. Eyewitness reports describe heartbreaking scenes at local morgues, where fragments of the deceased were received, including that of two young brothers.
Since resuming operations on March 18, Israel has been conducting daily strikes on homes and public spaces, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. A blockade has limited critical imports for Gaza’s over two million residents for nearly two months, leading to severe food shortages. The United Nations has warned that food reserves are nearly depleted and many children are suffering from malnutrition.
The Israeli government claims the blockade is a measure against Hamas, aimed at securing the release of hostages taken earlier in October. However, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has condemned the use of starvation in military strategies, deeming it a war crime.
The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported alarming shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, with hospitals struggling to manage increased malnutrition cases among pregnant and breastfeeding women. Many charity kitchens are at risk of closure, leaving Palestinians in desperate need of basic nutrition. In Deir al-Balah and Nuseirat, crowds are flocking to kitchens for their only meals of the day, often consisting of minimal offerings like thin tomato sauce or lentils.
As the conflict continues, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, calling for immediate international attention and intervention.
