Colorado Transgender Rights Bill Faces Turbulent Review Amid Contentious Debate
Denver, CO – A contentious bill aimed at bolstering transgender rights in Colorado underwent significant changes after state lawmakers stripped out its most controversial provisions, prompting heated debate at the state Capitol. The bill initially included a clause requiring courts to consider whether a parent was gender-affirming when making child custody decisions, but this has now been removed, risking the bill’s viability in the state Senate.
Supporters of the bill argue that it does not go far enough, while opponents contend that it still overreaches. Testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee drew large crowds, with both sides passionately advocating their positions. Critics highlighted concerns over parental rights, with one parent claiming they lost custody rights after opposing their child’s placement on puberty blockers.
The removed provisions also included a measure that would have deemed misgendering as a form of discrimination. However, the bill maintains requirements for gender-neutral dress codes in schools and mandates the use of transgender students’ preferred names where nicknames are allowed.

Conversely, supporters, including Z Williams, urged lawmakers to confront discrimination facing transgender individuals, arguing the bill offered essential solutions to pressing issues like housing, healthcare, and education.
Despite passing through the committee stage, the bill’s future on the Senate floor remains uncertain. The legislation previously cleared the state House with overwhelming support from Democrats, garnering near-unanimous opposition from Republicans.
