How to Safeguard Your Phone When Traveling Internationally

Travelers Advised to Consider Burner Phones as U.S. Border Searches Increase

As international travel resumes this summer, many are contemplating how to protect their personal data from increasing scrutiny at U.S. borders. In a recent article, a travel writer revealed their intent to leave their iPhone at home and instead use a burner phone, highlighting a growing trend among travelers concerned about privacy.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency has the authority to conduct searches of travelers’ electronic devices, a practice that has surged in recent years. In 2022, CBP reported approximately 43,000 electronics searches, a noticeable increase from previous years. While these inspections affect a small percentage of travelers, incidents have arisen where individuals were denied entry based on the content found on their mobile devices, including photos and social media posts deemed problematic.

Esha Bhandari, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, expressed concerns over the selective enforcement of these policies, noting that certain individuals, particularly those with sensitive information or dissenting views, face greater risks.

Experts advise travelers to assess their own risk levels. For those with minimal sensitive data, basic precautions—such as using passcodes and deleting apps—might suffice. Individuals with moderate concerns are encouraged to back up and wipe their devices before crossing the border. However, for those with high risks, like journalists or activists, utilizing a burner phone solely for travel may provide the best protection.

Burner phones allow users to limit data exposure, carrying only essential travel apps and employing temporary communication networks. As security practices evolve, travelers are urged to consider their privacy needs before embarking on their journeys.
