Former Athletic Director Sentenced for AI-Driven Racist Impersonation

In a troubling case from Baltimore, Dazhon Darien, a former athletic director at Pikesville High School, was sentenced to four months in jail on Monday after pleading guilty to disturbing school operations. Prosecutors revealed that Darien, 32, used artificial intelligence to fabricate a racist and antisemitic audio clip intended to impersonate the school’s principal, Eric Eiswert.

The audio clip, which surfaced in January 2024, contained derogatory remarks about students and was aimed at undermining Eiswert’s authority amid discussions about the non-renewal of Darien’s contract due to poor performance and procedural violations. Darien had previously faced serious charges, including theft and stalking.

The plea deal allowed Darien to maintain his innocence under an Alford plea, a legal maneuver that permits defendants to plead guilty while asserting they did not commit the crime. The fabricated audio clip stirred significant unrest within the Baltimore County Public Schools, impacting over 100,000 students. During the investigation, Eiswert received multiple threats to his safety and was placed on administrative leave.

Darien’s actions were reportedly fueled by a grievance against Eiswert after an internal investigation began regarding unauthorized payments to his roommate. This prompted Darien’s use of school internet resources to explore AI tools for his malicious endeavor.

As the case unfolds, Darien is also facing federal charges related to child exploitation and possession of child pornography, further complicating his legal troubles. The impact of his actions has raised concerns about the misuse of AI technology, igniting a debate on the potential dangers of easily produced deepfakes in today’s digital landscape. The Baltimore County Public Schools district declined to comment on the ongoing issues.
