Investigation Reveals Misguided Attack on Former NFL Player Josh Reynolds
In a shocking incident on October 18, 2022, former Denver Broncos player Josh Reynolds and two friends were shot at while being pursued by a group of alleged conspirators in a calculated attack across Denver. The Denver District Attorney’s Office announced this week that the shooting was not motivated by Reynolds’ status as an NFL player but rather was a case of mistaken identity.
The event unfolded over several hours and stretched nearly ten miles, involving up to a dozen assailants in four vehicles. The attackers used multiple firearms, discharging more than 30 shots at Reynolds and his friends while they were inside a Ford Bronco. Prosecutors labeled the incident a "premeditated attack,” but later clarified that the term “assassination” was not appropriate, asserting there was no political motive involved.
Reynolds and his friends had spent the evening at a strip club before the attack. They were first watched by Luis Mendoza, 42, who later coordinated the assault. According to a friend who witnessed the shooting, there was no apparent motive for the attackers, who may have mistaken them for someone else due to a prior conflict.
Reynolds was hit twice, while one friend, a pro rugby player, was injured by gunfire, and another suffered wounds from shattered glass. In a poignant reflection, the friend expressed confusion over the attack, emphasizing their unprovoked innocence. Despite the trauma, he noted the trio had chosen not to dwell on the incident, grateful for their survival.
Five men have been arrested in connection with the case, facing charges including attempted murder. Ongoing investigations suggest that several more suspects remain at large. The District Attorney’s Office is currently working to ensure the safety of the community while pursuing accountability for the violent assault.
