Press Release: Colorado Man Pleads Guilty in Deadly Arson Attack
DENVER, CO – In a tragic outcome from a 2020 house fire that resulted in the deaths of a Senegalese family of five, including two children, 20-year-old Kevin Bui has pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. Bui, who was part of a group of teenagers responsible for the deadly blaze, entered his plea on May 17, making him the last of three individuals to face charges in this case.
According to reports from the Associated Press, CBS News Colorado, and The Denver Post, Bui targeted the family’s home after his iPhone was stolen in City Park. Using an app to locate his stolen device, he mistakenly identified the victims’ residence as the location of his phone, despite having no actual ties to the family.
The fire claimed the lives of Djibril Diol, 29, his partner Adja Diol, 23, and their 22-month-old daughter, Khadija. Djibril’s sister, 25-year-old Hassan Diol, and her six-month-old daughter, Hawa Beye, also perished. Fortunately, three others escaped by jumping from windows, though they sustained serious injuries.
Bui initially faced 60 charges, including multiple counts of murder, but many were dismissed in a plea agreement. He could face up to 60 years in prison, with maximum penalties for each count reaching 48 years and potential fines of $1 million.
Bui was regarded as the ringleader, while his accomplices, Dillon Siebert and Gavin Seymour, also faced consequences for their roles. Seymour received a 40-year sentence for his guilty plea earlier this year, while Siebert was sentenced to a combination of juvenile and adult detention.
Bui’s sentencing is scheduled for July 2. The tragic incident has left a profound impact on the local community, mourning the loss of a family that had a bright future ahead.
