Trump Administration Cuts $32 Million in Grants for Denver’s Immigration Response
The Trump administration has announced the termination of approximately $32 million in federal grant funding designated for Denver’s efforts to address the illegal immigration crisis. The decision, articulated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), emphasizes that such funding no longer aligns with the federal government’s immigration enforcement priorities, as outlined by President Trump.
FEMA’s communication underscores a shift towards rigorous enforcement of immigration laws, asserting that funding for programs inadvertently supporting illegal immigrants contradicts the current objectives of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The letter specifically points to the provision of services to individuals without legal status, including those in the United States awaiting removal proceedings.
Since 2023, Denver has seen an influx of 43,000 immigrants crossing the southern border, prompting city officials to take responsibility for their humanitarian needs, which has already cost local taxpayers over $80 million. Approximately half of these immigrants have remained in the city, while others have opted for transportation to other locations.
Mayor Mike Johnston has been on the radar of the Trump administration due to his opposition to mass deportation policies. Earlier this year, he voiced his preparations for potential federal funding loss, emphasizing the moral dilemmas faced by the city in providing assistance to vulnerable families.
The canceled funds were initially allocated for essential services, including shelter, food, and medical care for immigrants released by DHS. Reports indicate Denver had already utilized roughly $8 million of these grants prior to the funding cut. Following the announcement, FEMA cautioned that Denver must refrain from incurring new costs and may be subject to reimbursements depending on a final review of allowable expenses.
This funding decision represents the latest measure in a broader crackdown on immigration, particularly targeting "sanctuary" cities like Denver.
