Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker Among Inductees in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
NEW YORK (AP) — The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its latest inductees, featuring first-time nominees Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, and Bad Company. Alongside them, pop icon Cyndi Lauper, hip-hop duo OutKast, the White Stripes, and the iconic Soundgarden will be honored.
Warren Zevon, the late singer-songwriter, and Salt-N-Pepa, the pioneering female rap group, will receive the prestigious Musical Influence Award. The Musical Excellence Award will be presented to producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins, and bassist Carol Kaye for their outstanding contributions to the industry.
Joe Cocker, renowned for his stirring performance at Woodstock and his iconic cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” received support from notable figures like Billy Joel and Pete Thomas, emphasizing his deep affiliation with rock music. Soundgarden, celebrated for their grunge influence with late lead singer Chris Cornell, enters the Hall on their third nomination, joining fellow grunge legends Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
Chubby Checker, 83, has long awaited his induction, famously stating his desire not to wait until he’s 85, reflecting on his historic hits “The Twist” and “Let’s Twist Again.” Cyndi Lauper rose to fame in the ’80s with classics like “Time After Time,” and OutKast, consisting of André 3000 and Big Boi, has changed the landscape of hip-hop with their innovative sound.
The induction ceremony will occur in Los Angeles this fall, following a selection process involving over 1,200 industry professionals. The Hall evaluates artists based on their influence, career longevity, and innovation in music. Notably absent from this year’s nominations were Mariah Carey and Oasis, among others.
