Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes, and Zach Werenski Named Norris Trophy Finalists
In an exciting announcement by the NHL, Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks, and Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets have been named finalists for the prestigious Norris Trophy. This trophy honors the defenseman displaying the greatest all-around ability throughout the season.
Cale Makar stands out as a frontrunner for the award, aiming for his second Norris win. His incredible performance this season boasts 30 goals, 62 assists, and a total of 90 points, leading all defensemen and placing him ninth in league scoring. Makar, a finalist every year in this decade, previously claimed the Norris in 2022 after finishing third in the voting for the last two seasons. Notably, he joins an elite group of defensemen, being one of only nine to score 30 goals in a season, and the first since 2008-09.
Quinn Hughes, who showed promise early in the season, was hindered by injuries that sidelined him during the midseason. Despite this, he finished with 16 goals and 78 points, maintaining an impressive 1.12 points-per-game average.
Meanwhile, Zach Werenski made significant contributions to the Blue Jackets, tallying 23 goals and 82 points, trailing only Makar among defensemen. Averaging 26 minutes and 45 seconds on the ice, Werenski’s performance could have been more prominently recognized had the Blue Jackets secured a playoff spot.
Voting for the Norris Trophy is conducted by select members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. As the awards season progresses, anticipation builds for the revelation of other nominees, including the Vezina Trophy and Hart Trophy, among others.
