Press Release: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Announces Inductees for 2023
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has revealed its 2023 inductees, celebrating a diverse array of influential artists. First-time nominees Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, and Bad Company will join the ranks, alongside pop icon Cyndi Lauper, hip-hop visionaries OutKast, rock duo The White Stripes, and grunge legends Soundgarden.
Two additional honors will be awarded: the Musical Influence Award will go to Salt-N-Pepa— pioneers as the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum sales—and the late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. Meanwhile, the Musical Excellence Award will be presented to the late producer Thom Bell, renowned pianist Nicky Hopkins, and esteemed bassist Carol Kaye.
Joe Cocker, remembered for his powerful rendition of "With a Little Help From My Friends" at Woodstock, had strong advocates in the music community, including Billy Joel and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Soundgarden will be inducted on their third nomination, following grunge icons Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad Company, recognized for hits like "Feel Like Makin’ Love," will also be honored for their significant radio presence.
Additionally, the Ahmet Ertegun Award will be presented to Lenny Waronker, former head of Warner Bros. Records, lauded for his role in shaping the careers of music legends such as Prince and R.E.M.
Notable nominees missing this year include Mariah Carey, Billy Idol, and Oasis. The induction ceremony is set to take place in Los Angeles this fall, with selections determined by over 1,200 industry professionals based on criteria including impact, longevity, and innovation within the music realm. Last year’s honorees included Mary J. Blige and Cher, among others.
