‘A Tree Holds Greater Value’: Civilians Escape Zamzam Amid RSF Assault | Sudan War Report

Zamzam Camp Under Siege: A Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

In mid-April, Zamzam Camp in North Darfur was engulfed in violence as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a brutal three-day assault, claiming to have captured a nonexistent "military base." Witnesses described a scene of chaos as families fled amidst relentless gunfire, with many unaccounted for. This tragedy follows a five-month siege that restricted access to essential aid, leaving the camp vulnerable.

Zamzam has sheltered displaced civilians since the early 2000s, feeling the brunt of ethnic cleansing and violence that has marked the Darfur conflict. Originally housing around 300,000 people, the population swelled to over 500,000 as violence escalated following the outbreak of Sudan’s civil war in April 2023. What was once a refuge has now become a battleground, with aid blockades contributing to a dire humanitarian situation.

Medical officials estimate the death toll exceeds 500, though precise figures are difficult to ascertain due to the tradition of immediate burial. Concrete accounts from survivors depict horrifying conditions; one woman recounted her ordeal as her family fled from one RSF attack after another, enduring starvation and witnessing death.

Nasr, a survivor from Zalingei, lost contact with his family during a recent siege. He shared painful reflections on the value of human life amidst such violence, echoing widespread sentiments among those displaced multiple times. The RSF’s narrative of fighting military elements contrasts sharply with survivors’ testimonies, which highlight the reality of innocent civilians trapped in this escalating conflict.

As desperation mounts and violence continues, the silence from the international community remains palpable. Zamzam Camp stands as a stark reminder of the urgent need for humanitarian intervention in the face of ongoing atrocities.
