Colorado Honors Late Rep. Hugh McKean with Memorial Highway
This week, the Colorado State Capitol was filled with a mix of laughter and tears as lawmakers gathered to honor the late House Minority Leader Hugh McKean, who passed away on October 30, 2022. A resolution was introduced to designate a portion of Colorado State Highway 402, from US Highway 287 to Interstate 25 in Larimer County, as the "Rep. Hugh McKean Memorial Highway."
Rep. Ron Weinberg, who currently represents McKean’s district, initiated the resolution with an emotional tribute. Joined by former state Rep. Amy Parks, McKean’s partner who has stepped into his role, and his children, Weinberg reminisced about McKean’s infectious personality, bear hugs, and his penchant for forging bipartisan relationships. Weinberg also shared a humorous exchange where he often questions McKean’s absence during a drive-through at McDonald’s.
The memorial sign, estimated to cost around $1,300, will be funded through a GoFundMe campaign, and Weinberg expressed confidence in the community’s eagerness to contribute. "Seeing that name on Highway 402 will remind people of what he did for Colorado, focusing on unity over partisanship," he said.
House Speaker Julie McCluskie recounted her experiences with McKean, noting how his laughter still resonates within the chamber. Several current and former legislators shared heartfelt stories, emphasizing his warmth and encouragement. Rep. Matt Soper highlighted McKean’s ability to foster camaraderie, while others affectionately remembered his loving nature and infectious spirit that made an indelible mark on their lives.
As Colorado prepares to affix McKean’s name to the highway, legislators look forward to honoring his legacy, which remains a beacon for unity and collaboration in state politics.
