Denver Broncos Select LSU Edge Rusher Sai’vion Jones in NFL Draft
GREEN BAY, Wisc. — The Denver Broncos made a strategic move during the NFL Draft, trading back into the third round to secure edge rusher Sai’vion Jones from LSU with the 101st overall pick.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 280 pounds, Jones brings a unique blend of size and toughness that makes him a versatile asset on the field. Known for his relentless motor and physical playstyle, he excels in both run defense and handling double-team blocks, attributes crucial for today’s competitive NFL landscape.
In his senior year at LSU, Jones recorded 40 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks, showcasing his potential as a formidable defender. Despite being ranked 16th among edge rushers in the draft, analysts believe he’s somewhat unrefined as a pass rusher, particularly in reading plays. Fortunately for the Broncos, this means he won’t be pressured to immediately play a pivotal role, as they already have established starters Nick Bonitto and Jonathan Cooper to lead the charge.
The selection of Jones may even benefit Bonitto, who could be utilized more effectively on passing downs, allowing Jones to come in for run-heavy situations. With his athleticism and size, Jones is poised to enhance the Broncos’ pass-rushing capabilities.
The Broncos executed the trade by sending picks Nos. 111, 130, and 191 to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for picks Nos. 101 and 134. Jones marks the second defensive player the Broncos have selected in this draft, following Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron, the Jim Thorpe Award winner, taken in the first round. Earlier on draft day, Denver also bolstered its offense by choosing UCF running back RJ Harvey and Illinois wide receiver Pat Bryant.
