Colorado Senate Defies Polis’ Veto, Passes Social Media Bill | Latest Update

The Colorado state Senate voted 29-6 to override Governor Jared Polis’s veto of a social media bill, marking the first time a gubernatorial veto has been overridden in decades. Senate Bill 86 would require large social media companies to remove accounts engaged in illegal activity involving children under 13, such as drug sales, sex trafficking, and firearms sales. The governor expressed concerns about the bill eroding privacy and freedom and potentially stifling constitutionally-protected speech. Despite opposition from major tech companies, the ACLU, and others, the override had support from Senate leadership and various organizations focused on child safety. Some lawmakers changed their votes during the override process, with the House expected to vote on the override next. The bill’s supporters emphasized the importance of protecting children and criticizing misinformation spread about the bill. A second veto override on another bill related to the state’s open records law was postponed to May 2, sparking speculation about the outcome. The Governor now has time to try to sway House Democrats to switch their votes on the bill.
