Rockies fire hitting coach Hensley Meulens amidst struggles

The Colorado Rockies made a significant coaching change on Thursday by firing hitting coach Hensley Meulens and bringing in former manager Clint Hurdle to replace him. This decision comes as the Rockies are struggling with a 3-15 record and poor offensive performance, hitting .220 with only 12 home runs and 52 runs, ranking near the bottom in the league.

Meulens had been the hitting coach for the Rockies since 2022 and has an impressive track record, previously helping the San Francisco Giants win three World Series titles. Hurdle, on the other hand, managed the Rockies from 2002-09 and led the team to a World Series appearance in 2007. He also has experience as a hitting coach with the team in the past and has managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2011-19.

With the struggles the Rockies are facing early in the season, the organization is hoping that the coaching change will provide a fresh perspective and help the team turn things around. Hurdle, who has been a special assistant to the general manager since December 2021, brings a wealth of experience and familiarity with the organization, making him a suitable candidate to lead the hitting coaching staff.

The Rockies will look to make the most of this coaching change as they aim to improve their performance and climb up the standings in the National League. The team will face the Nationals in their upcoming series, hoping for a turnaround in their offensive production under Hurdle’s guidance.
