Cargill Kitchen Solutions has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 212,268 pounds of liquid egg substitutes sold under the Egg Beaters and Bob Evans labels due to potential contamination with a cleaning solution containing sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach. The products were distributed in Ohio, Texas, and several other states for food service use, with a possibility of nationwide distribution.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service received a tip about the contamination, prompting an investigation that determined the risk to consumers was relatively low. There have been no reports of adverse reactions, but customers are advised not to consume the affected products and to return them to the store or discard them. The products were produced on March 12 and 13, 2025, and can be identified by the label G1804 on their cartons.
This recall comes at a time when consumers are seeking egg alternatives due to rising prices and shortages in supermarkets nationwide. The risk of contamination with bleach adds to existing concerns about food safety amid outbreaks of bird flu in poultry and cows in the United States.
Cargill Kitchen Solutions has not provided further details on the recall, but the company emphasized that it was done as a precautionary measure. Customers who have purchased the affected products are urged to take appropriate steps to ensure their safety.
