Denver’s model train show draws in thousands of railway enthusiasts

Denver’s Rocky Mountain Train Show drew railway enthusiasts from near and far for a weekend of model train showcases at the National Western Complex. Organized by John Gardberg, the event featured a variety of model trains, with a focus on Colorado’s rich railroad history. The show, which first began in 1976, has grown to attract over 10,000 attendees annually, with more than 150 vendors participating.

One highlight of the event was the presence of the Near Sighted Narrow Gaugers model railroad club, whose members showcased elaborate western-themed tracks and intricate model trains. For many enthusiasts, like Carl Stauffer, the show provided a rare opportunity to display their entire hobby in a room-sized railway model. The model train projects on display ranged from full-room Lego sets to replicas of famous landmarks like Disneyland, complete with operating mini replicas of famous rides.

Among the attendees was Tom Davey, an online model train shop owner who drove 22 hours from Georgia to attend the show. He noted that Denver’s Rocky Mountain Train Show is one of the biggest and best that he attends out of the 27 train shows he visits annually. For many participants, like Doug Gary, building and showcasing these model trains is a way to relive childhood memories and connect with others who share a passion for the hobby.

Overall, the Rocky Mountain Train Show was a celebration of all things model railroading, showcasing the creativity and dedication of enthusiasts from across the country. The event highlighted the enduring appeal of model trains and their ability to captivate both young and old alike.
