Lithuania’s Defense Ministry successfully recovered a U.S. military vehicle from a bog nearly a week after American soldiers went missing. The soldiers, from the First Brigade, Third Infantry Division, were training near the Belarusian border when their M88 Hercules vehicle became submerged in mud.
Efforts to lift the vehicle out of the bog were led by U.S. Navy divers who swam into the murky waters to attach cables to the sunken vehicle. The dense mud made it difficult for the divers to reach the vehicle, and rescue crews had to excavate and pump water out of the bog. Rescue operations were further complicated by a landslide on Sunday, making the mission an “exhausting fight with the power of the deep swamp,” according to Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene.
Both Lithuanian and American military personnel, along with hundreds of law enforcement officers, participated in the search efforts. The cooperation between Lithuania, a NATO member, and the U.S. showcased the importance of allies working together. Poland, another NATO member and Lithuania’s neighbor, also sent military engineers to assist in the recovery efforts.
The incident highlighted the concerns of Eastern European countries, including Lithuania, about potential weakening of NATO under the Trump administration. Despite criticisms from Belarus and Russia, Lithuania’s commitment to assisting in the search for the missing U.S. soldiers demonstrated the unity and strength of allied nations acting together in times of need.
