Colorado Gun Bill Amendments Up for Vote: Government to Concur

In a significant victory for Democrats, the Colorado Senate passed Senate Bill 003 with a 19-15 vote, requiring Coloradans to participate in safety training before purchasing certain types of firearms. The bill, initially aiming to ban semiautomatic firearms with detachable magazines, was amended to allow their purchase after completing a firearms safety course. The legislation, introduced by Sens. Tom Sullivan and Julie Gonzales, along with Reps. Andrew Boesenecker and Meg Froelich, aims to prevent future mass shootings.
Opponents, including Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, argue that the bill infringes on Second Amendment rights and puts additional responsibilities on Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Despite pushback, sponsors defend the bill’s constitutionality, citing similar laws upheld in other states. The bill’s passage comes after failed attempts to ban semiautomatic weapons in past legislative sessions.
Rep. Ryan Armagost criticized the bill, stating it creates an “elite club” of gun owners who can afford the safety training. He believes the opinions of all constituents, including those in rural areas, should carry weight in the decision-making process. However, Sullivan argues that the bill is a necessary step to address gun violence, citing the high number of deaths caused by firearms each year.
The bill’s passage through both the Senate and the House, with some amendments related to financing of the safety training, marks a significant shift in Colorado’s approach to gun control. Supporters and opponents continue to debate the bill’s implications and effectiveness in preventing future tragedies.
