The Evolution of Trains and Railroads in Colorado

Denver7 recently highlighted a videographer’s capture of the last coal-burning train on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, prompting reflection on the significance of trains in Colorado’s history. Joe Fusco’s film of the No. 481 engine sparked curiosity about the role of locomotives in the state’s past. Dr. Rachael Storm of History Colorado explained that railroads played a crucial role in Colorado’s development, especially narrow gauge lines that facilitated transportation through mountainous terrain.
The rail industry not only transported goods like silver, gold, and marble but also fueled turn-of-the-century tourism, with churches even renting trains for mountain picnics. Despite the decline in passenger traffic, railroads remain essential for moving goods efficiently and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as trains can transport significantly more than trucks or airplanes. The recent investments by major rail companies in eco-friendly technologies highlight the industry’s commitment to sustainability.
Innovative transportation solutions like a proposed “Truck Train” model to alleviate traffic on Interstate 70 and the development of a hyperloop test track in Colorado hint at a rail renaissance. Dr. Storm believes that Coloradans are open to using public transportation if it saves time and reduces environmental impact, possibly leading to a revival of train travel. Despite the challenges posed by a changing climate and increasing congestion, the railroad industry in Colorado continues to adapt and evolve to meet the state’s transportation needs.
