The Denver Broncos have hired former New Orleans Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi as their new special teams coordinator. Rizzi, who was a finalist for the Saints’ permanent head coach position, replaces Ben Kotwica, who was fired in January. Rizzi has worked in the NFL since 2009 and was most recently the Special Teams Coordinator for the Saints.
In 2024, Rizzi became the interim head coach for the Saints, leading them to a 3-5 record. Despite a down year for the team, the Saints’ special teams units remained strong, ranking first in opponent’s averaging starting field position and fifth in average punt returns. In Denver, Rizzi inherits dynamic returner Marvin Mims Jr. and kicker Wil Lutz.
Improving the kicking game will be among Rizzi’s top priorities with the Broncos. One of his first decisions will be identifying a punter, as Riley Dixon is now an unrestricted free agent. During Kotwica’s tenure, the Broncos made significant progress on special teams, but critical mistakes were made, such as a blocked field goal that cost them a game against the Chiefs.
Both Payton and the Broncos have coaching positions to fill. Payton needs a new tight ends coach, while the Broncos have openings for an inside linebackers coach and pass-game coordinator. They will also need to add an assistant special teams coach since Chris Banjo, who filled that role under Kotwica, was hired elsewhere.
Rizzi is now one of six coaches on Payton’s staff who previously worked for him in New Orleans. His hiring brings high hopes for improving the Broncos’ special teams unit and overall performance in the upcoming season.
