The Colorado Republican Party has filed a lawsuit against six prominent state Republicans, including former party officials, alleging they orchestrated a failed “coup” in an attempt to remove current state GOP Chairman Dave Williams and his fellow party officers from their positions last summer. The lawsuit, filed in El Paso County District Court, seeks unspecified damages to be determined at trial. The alleged coup cost the party substantial legal fees and diverted resources from campaigns just weeks before the November election.
The lawsuit claims that the group of Republicans engaged in unethical and fraudulent actions to cling to power, including attempting to reinstate the state party’s former attorney to his position. Some of the defendants have declined to comment on the lawsuit, while others have criticized Williams and RINO Watch, an anonymous website that posted the lawsuit online.
State Republican Brita Horn, who recently announced her bid for state GOP chair, issued a statement criticizing Williams and expressing her commitment to unite the Colorado Republican Party. Williams, who has not yet revealed if he plans to seek a second term as party chair, did not respond to requests for comment.
The lawsuit details the infighting within the state GOP, including competing meetings, court cases, and dual headquarters. The lawsuit also highlights Williams’ controversial tenure as state chair, including distributing party emails attacking the LGBTQ community and losing a congressional primary by a large margin despite an endorsement from Donald Trump.
The state party and its officers are requesting a jury trial in hopes of holding the defendants accountable for the turmoil within the party leading up to the 2024 presidential election.
