Dr. Chad Husby, a botanist at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, Florida, discovered a newfound fascination for the genus Sansevieria in 2019. This interest was sparked by a rare silvery Sansevieria plant he received as a gift during a botanical society meeting in San Diego. This encounter led him to realize the vast diversity within the Sansevieria genus, beyond the commonly known snake plant.
Husby embarked on a search for unique Sansevieria species and cultivars, acquiring specimens from various collectors and botanical gardens across the country. In 2021, he and a colleague drove a truck filled with Sansevierias back to Fairchild, significantly expanding the garden’s collection.
With over 200 accessions representing 46 species now on display at Fairchild, Sansevierias have become a prominent feature of the garden. The plants thrive outdoors in South Florida’s climate, making it a suitable environment for their growth.
While most people are familiar with the resilient nature of the snake plant, there is much more to appreciate about Sansevierias beyond their low-maintenance care requirements. Husby recommends providing filtered light, well-draining soil, and regular watering to help these slow-growing plants thrive.
The diversity within the Sansevieria genus is vast, with different species and cultivars showcasing unique leaf colors, shapes, and patterns. With approximately 100 species and numerous cultivars available, collectors have a wide variety of options to choose from to create their own unique Sansevieria collection.
Husby’s passion for Sansevierias has led him to explore the different possibilities within the genus, from cylindrical foliage to variegated patterns. As he continues to study and collect Sansevierias, the beauty and diversity of these plants continue to captivate him and other enthusiasts in the botanical world.
