Douglas County expresses solidarity with proposed legislation enabling Colorado law enforcement to collaborate with ICE

Law enforcement officials in Douglas County are showing their support for legislation that would allow local officials to work with federal immigration agents to focus on criminals who have entered the country illegally. The bill, Senate Bill 25-047, aims to overturn a state law that prohibits local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE. Despite facing challenges in the Democrat-controlled legislature, lawmakers believe that the public’s awareness of immigration issues may increase the bill’s chances of passing.

State Senator Mark Baisley, along with Representatives Max Brooks and Chris Richardson, are leading the effort to gain support for the bill. They argue that the current law prevents them from holding immigrants who have committed crimes or have ties to gang activity accountable.

The bill is described as nonpartisan and common sense, with lawmakers emphasizing that they are not targeting immigrants who are seeking a better life, but rather focusing on removing legal protections for criminals who are exploiting the system. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has already taken 20 immigrants into custody who have committed crimes within or outside the county.

Law enforcement officials believe that this legislation is a necessary step towards ensuring public safety and holding criminals accountable. The bill is set to be considered on February 25, but concerns remain that it may not pass due to party lines. Despite the challenges, supporters of the bill are hopeful that it will pave the way for better cooperation between local and federal authorities in addressing immigration issues.
