Colorado remains in the icy grip of bitter cold and heavy snow

Colorado and the Front Range are bracing for a winter blast as a combination of extreme cold and snowfall hits the region. The state is under a First Alert Weather Day through Thursday as an Arctic Blast and a Pacific storm system team up to bring wintery weather to the area.

While not a major snowstorm, the storm is expected to impact travel with Denver metro area, suburbs, and eastern plains potentially seeing 1 to 3 inches of snow by Wednesday morning. Areas near the foothills may receive 2 to 4 inches, while the Front Range and west central Mountain areas could see 4 to 8 inches of snow by Wednesday afternoon.

Although snow intensity is expected to decrease by Wednesday afternoon, cold air will linger until early Thursday morning. Temperatures will remain below freezing until Thursday afternoon, with overnight lows in the single digits to below zero and wind chills as low as 10 to 20 below zero in eastern Colorado. Wind chill temperatures on Thursday morning will again be below zero, with highs above freezing arriving later in the day.

Despite the cold snap, there is a warm-up in store for Friday Valentine’s Day, with temperatures returning to the 50s. Chief Meteorologist Dave Aguilera is keeping a close eye on the weather developments, and updates can be found on CBS News Colorado.
