President Trump has demanded that Ukraine give the US rare earth minerals as payment for war aid, claiming that the nation had agreed to the deal. Trump said Ukraine may or may not lose its sovereignty to Russia, but regardless, he wants compensation for the aid provided by the US. This comes amidst tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with Russia targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure in an attempt to weaken the country.
In response, Ukraine’s energy minister imposed emergency restrictions after Russia attacked gas infrastructure, leading to ongoing struggles in the energy sector. Polish and allied aircraft were also activated to ensure safety in regions bordering the threatened zones following Russian air strikes on Ukraine.
As diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia intensify, Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed that “serious” members of Trump’s team will visit Ukraine this week for the first time. This includes plans to meet with Vice President JD Vance at the Munich conference. Zelensky also expressed the intention to meet with Trump, as the US administration works towards finding a path towards resolution of the conflict. The White House officials are expected to discuss the ongoing situation with Zelensky in Munich, amidst claims from the Kremlin that relations between the US and Russia are “balancing on the brink of a breakup.”
