Listeria Risk Leads to Recall of 2 Million Baked Goods

About two million baked goods, including doughnuts and coffee rolls sold at Dunkin’, have been recalled due to concerns of potential contamination with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. The manufacturer FGF Brands issued the voluntary recall after identifying the potential risk of contamination. The recalled products, including chocolate, raspberry, and Bavarian doughnuts, French crullers, éclairs, and coffee rolls produced before Dec. 13, 2024, were sold at Dunkin’. The source of the contamination has not been identified.

The recall, classified as Class II, signifies that exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. The Food and Drug Administration did not provide specific guidelines for consumers regarding the recall or mention any illnesses related to the recalled baked goods. Listeria is the third leading cause of death from food-borne illness in the United States, with symptoms including fever and headaches.

Infections from listeria are rare but can be severe, particularly for pregnant women, older people, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems. Each year, about 1,600 people in the United States are infected with listeria, resulting in roughly 260 deaths. The most recent recall related to listeria occurred in December when Braga Fresh recalled packages of ready-to-eat broccoli florets sold at Walmart due to potential contamination. FGF Brands and Dunkin’ have not responded to inquiries regarding the recall. Consumers are urged to be cautious and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms related to listeria contamination.
