Irish boxer John Cooney tragically passed away at the age of 28, just a week after being taken into intensive care following his Celtic super-featherweight title defeat to Nathan Howells in Belfast. The news was announced by his promoter Mark Dunlop on behalf of the Cooney family and his fiancee Emmaleen. Cooney’s fight with Howells was stopped in the ninth round at Ulster Hall, and he subsequently underwent surgery for an intracranial haemorrhage. His loved ones expressed gratitude to the staff at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital for their efforts to save his life. Cooney, known as ‘the Kid’, was described as a much-loved son, brother, and partner, with former boxing world champion Barry McGuigan calling him a “lovely kid.” Cooney had won the Celtic super-featherweight title in November 2023 and was making his first defense when the tragic incident occurred.
