Military, Veterans, and POW/MIA Appreciation Day is held annually at the state Capitol in early February. Lawmakers gather to recognize the sacrifices made by Colorado’s servicemen and women in combat. New resolutions have been added this year, including one recognizing the service of veterans from the Korean War. This war is often referred to as the “forgotten war,” and Resolution 1015 honors the veterans for their service that was once overlooked. The resolution acknowledges the important role American servicemembers played in this conflict, which helped turn the tide in the fight for democracy and freedom against communism. The bravery and sacrifices of those who served in the Korean War will never be forgotten again.
During the ceremony in the House chambers, Korean War veterans Richard “Dick” Robinson and Wayne Tobey were recognized for their service. Robinson, a decorated veteran, served in the 48th Field Artillery Battalion and earned several awards for his bravery. Tobey, who served as a radio operator in the US Air Force, played a crucial role in providing radio signals for precision bombing missions. Despite facing challenges and limited resources during the war, Tobey’s quick thinking and use of Morse code saved a fellow airman’s life.
The addition of the Resolution recognizing Korean War veterans is a significant step in honoring those who served in this conflict. Their contributions to defending democracy and freedom will now be remembered alongside those who served in other wars and conflicts. The ceremony at the state Capitol served as a heartfelt tribute to these veterans and their families.
