Baltic States Sever Final Energy Connection with Russia | Energy News

Three Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, have disconnected from Russia’s power grid and integrated with the European Union network to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on Moscow amid concerns of aggression. The move, which follows recent incidents of suspected sabotage, marks a significant step towards European unity and freedom from potential blackmail.
The grid operators of the three former Soviet states have successfully uncoupled their electricity systems from the Russian-led BRELL network, with plans to synchronize with the EU grid via Poland. The decision to disconnect was motivated by Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which highlighted the vulnerability of energy dependence on Moscow.
While celebrations are planned to mark the milestone, authorities have warned of potential risks such as cyberattacks, sabotage, and disinformation campaigns. The Lithuanian state security department cited short-term risks, including kinetic operations against critical infrastructure, emphasizing the need for vigilance post-disconnection.
Despite concerns, officials have reassured the public that the system is stable, and the transition has been smooth. Latvia, in particular, deployed armed officers to patrol the border with Russia and is vigilant for any possible provocations. Poland has also taken measures to ensure the security of the connection with Lithuania, using drones and helicopters for surveillance.
The successful disconnection from the Russian grid symbolizes a victory for European unity and energy independence, showcasing the determination of the Baltic states to strengthen their integration with the EU while safeguarding their energy security.
