Senate advances repeal of Colorado Labor Peace Act | Government

A bill to repeal the Colorado Labor Peace Act’s requirement for a second election to establish a “union security” agreement has passed through the Senate Appropriations Committee in a 4-1 vote and is heading to the Senate floor. Senate Bill 005 has received strong support from labor unions but has faced backlash from the business community. The bill would require non-union workers to pay a fee to the union once an agreement is reached between the company and the union, with 75% of workers needing to vote “yes” in the second election. The bill is expected to reduce state costs by about $25,000 for Fiscal Year 2025-2026 and $37,000 in future years. Chair Judy Amabile and two other Democrat Senators voted in favor of passing the bill, while Republican Senator Byron Pelton voted against it. The bill has already passed through the Senate Business, Labor and Technology Committee with a 4-3 favorable vote last month. The fate of the bill now rests in the hands of the Senate as it moves forward for further debate and consideration.
