Victim and perpetrator in Colorado form friendship and embrace restorative justice

After decades of being intertwined by a violent armed robbery, Jason Kasperek and Michael Clifton have come together to share their story of forgiveness and redemption. Kasperek, the victim of the crime, has found forgiveness in his heart for Clifton and Rene Lima-Marin, the two men who were sentenced to 98 years each for the robbery at a Blockbuster store where Kasperek worked as a manager. Clifton, who spent over two decades in prison, now works with a non-profit to help ex-convicts reintegrate into society without reoffending.

The journey towards forgiveness and restorative justice began when Kasperek met with Lima-Marin, who had been released early due to a paperwork error, and accepted his apology. With the help of a reporter, Kasperek facilitated a meeting between Clifton and his family to support his clemency petition. In 2023, Clifton was released, tearfully expressing his gratitude and his commitment to living a changed life.

Both Kasperek and Clifton now share their stories with young people, hoping to inspire a sense of forgiveness and redemption in a society that often values punishment over rehabilitation. Kasperek emphasizes the importance of transparency in acknowledging one’s past mistakes and the healing power of forgiveness. Through their friendship and shared experiences, Kasperek and Clifton are working to show that forgiveness is not a weakness, but a strength that can lead to a better future for everyone involved.
