UK set to make history as first country to outlaw AI tools used for child abuse | Child Rights News

The UK government has announced plans to criminalize the possession, creation, and distribution of artificial intelligence tools used to generate sexual content targeting children. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the need to address the growing issue of AI-generated child abuse images, which are increasingly being used for grooming and exploitation. Offenders could face up to five years in prison for possessing or distributing AI tools that generate abusive images, while those caught with AI “paedophile manuals” could face up to three years. Additionally, individuals running websites for sharing child sexual abuse content or grooming advice may face up to 10 years in prison. Cooper expressed concern over the disturbing trend of AI facilitating online child exploitation and called for other countries to follow suit in implementing similar laws. The Internet Watch Foundation has reported a significant increase in AI-generated child abuse images, with over 3,500 identified on a single dark web site in a 30-day period. The government’s move aims to combat this concerning trend and protect vulnerable children from exploitation in the digital age.
