Vodafone Achieves Historic Milestone with World’s First Space Video Call made from Remote Area Using Standard Mobile Phone and Commercial Satellites for Mobile Broadband Experience

Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer made history by completing the first space mobile video call from a remote area of Wales to Vodafone Group Chief Executive, Margherita Della Valle, using satellites built to provide full mobile broadband capabilities. Joined by astronaut Tim Peake in Newbury, UK, they unveiled the first space-to-land gateway in Europe, connecting satellites with Vodafone’s terrestrial network seamlessly.

This accomplishment marks the only satellite service worldwide offering mobile broadband directly to multiple regular 4G/5G smartphones. Vodafone plans to launch a commercial direct-to-smartphone broadband satellite service in Europe between 2025 and 2026, bridging the digital divide and closing mobile coverage gaps.

The new technology allows users in areas with no mobile coverage to make video calls, access the Internet, and use online messaging services without special equipment. Anchored by Vodafone’s European 5G network, the satellite network will expand connectivity to underserved populations and provide reliable rural connectivity during emergencies.

Vodafone’s partnership with AST SpaceMobile has yielded multiple space-based broadband connectivity milestones, including the first-ever space-based voice call and 5G voice call. The satellite service operates from low Earth orbit and complements Vodafone’s land-based networks, ensuring ubiquitous connectivity across Europe.

By leveraging satellite technology and 5G, Vodafone is committed to closing coverage gaps and enhancing digital inclusion. The forthcoming direct-to-smartphone broadband satellite service will provide seamless connectivity and augment Vodafone’s existing infrastructure to deliver reliable communication in any location or situation.
