Independent bookstores on Colorado’s Western Slope have had a successful year in 2024, catering to readers of all ages and interests. From bestsellers to trends, six local stores shared their top books in various categories including fiction, nonfiction, young adult, and cookbooks.
While each store had different bestsellers, one book resonated across all of them – “The Women” by Kristin Hannah, a historical fiction novel set during the Vietnam War. Historical fiction was a consistent favorite among readers, with “James” by Percival Everett also making multiple lists.
In nonfiction, titles like “A Walk in the Park” by Kevin Fedarko were popular, showcasing readers’ interest in nature and adventure topics. Cookbooks featured local flavors and ski country influences, with Tieghan Gerard’s “Half Baked Harvest Every Day” being a standout.
Trends in book buying also reflected readers’ desire for escapism, light fiction, and social media influence on book popularity. Indie bookstores have thrived, with new store openings and an increase in membership within the American Booksellers Association.
