More Snow on the Horizon for Colorado’s Ski Resorts as Chill Lingers
Colorado’s high country is set to welcome fresh snowfall as the harshest cold temperatures recede, promising an active weather pattern for the last weekend of January. The National Weather Service (NWS) has reported extreme lows, including a temperature of -18 degrees at Breckenridge’s Peak 8 summit and a high of just 1 degree at Copper Mountain.
Starting Tuesday night, a fast-moving ‘clipper’ storm is bringing light snow across northern Colorado, with estimates predicting 3-5 inches in the northern mountains and up to 1-3 inches in the central regions, while southern mountains could see minimal amounts. Temperature lows are expected to persist with highs remaining in the single digits and low teens.
Anticipation builds as a more substantial storm pattern is forecast to begin Friday, promising more significant snowfall statewide. This system is expected to produce 6-10 inches in the northern mountains—particularly in the Park Range and Summit County—while the central mountains could receive 3-5 inches and southern areas a lesser 2-4 inches over the weekend.
Additionally, snow is forecast to continue into early February, marking an active period of winter weather for Colorado ski resorts. However, January has been somewhat dry for resorts like Purgatory Mountain, which recorded only 69 inches of snow this season, with just five inches falling this month.
As conditions improve, Colorado’s ski enthusiasts are gearing up for a refreshing dose of powdery snow and an exciting week on the slopes ahead. For now, skiers should prepare for a wintery on-hill experience with continued chilly temperatures in the forecast.
