In a shocking turn of events in China, two men who committed deadly attacks killing dozens of people have been executed. Fan Weiqu, 62, rammed his car into a crowd at a sports complex, killing 35 people, while 21-year-old Xu Jiajin killed eight and injured 17 in a stabbing attack at his vocational school. Fan was reportedly upset over his divorce settlement, while Xu had failed his exams and couldn’t graduate.
These incidents, classified as “revenge-on-society crimes,” have raised concerns in China, with President Xi Jinping urging local governments to prevent such attacks. The country typically has low rates of violent crime due to strict gun controls and mass surveillance. However, there have been recent calls to examine personal disputes that could lead to aggression.
The executions of Fan and Xu were carried out by shooting after being sentenced to death by the intermediate people’s courts in Zhuhai and Wuxi, respectively. China is known to execute more prisoners than any other country, with exact numbers classified as a state secret. The use of lethal injections has also been introduced in recent years.
These tragic events highlight the importance of addressing personal disputes and mental health issues in a society where the state’s control over social and political aspects is tightening. The Chinese government is now under scrutiny to take further measures to prevent such violent incidents from happening in the future.
