Denver Artist Raj Chaudhuri Wins Best in Show at Coors Western Art Exhibit
In a remarkable culmination of his artistic journey, Raj Chaudhuri, a Denver-based painter originally from Calcutta, India, received the prestigious Best in Show award at the 2024 Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale. The accolade, an exceptional honor in the Western art community, underscores Chaudhuri’s deep connection to the American West, which he cherished even as a child influenced by images of cowboys.
Chaudhuri’s award-winning piece, "Colorado Daybreak," showcases his signature style, depicting horses at a trough outside a barn, enveloped in striking shadows and snow. His fascination with the West is evident in his work, where he paints ranchers and landscapes featuring Colorado’s majestic terrain.
This year marked Chaudhuri’s fifth appearance at the Coors show, where he sold three out of six paintings on opening night. He emphasizes the importance of working "en plein air," or painting outdoors, stating it allows him to capture the essence of subjects authentically—a practice he values over reliance on photographs.
Teaching at the Art Students League of Denver, Chaudhuri nurtures fellow artists through a class titled "The Traveling Painter." His dedication to the craft has earned him recognition among peers, including Daniel Sprick, who commended Chaudhuri’s extensive knowledge and artistic talent.
While Chaudhuri’s art reflects his fascination with Western themes, he also draws from his multicultural background and experiences, painting both American and Indian markets, finding beauty across two worlds. With a rigorous work ethic and a passion for growth, he continually seeks to infuse dignity into his art while portraying the authentic narratives of the people and landscapes he loves.
As he prepares for future projects, Chaudhuri’s artistic journey remains a testament to the power of perseverance and passion in achieving one’s dreams.
