Sixth Wildfire Ignites in Los Angeles, Five People Dead as California Fires Rage On

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) has named the sixth fire to break out in Los Angeles as the Sunset fire, which currently encompasses 10 acres. As wildfires continue to devastate southern California, celebrities like Billy Crystal and Mandy Moore have reported losing their homes to the flames. President Joe Biden has signed a federal disaster declaration, providing federal funding for affected individuals in Los Angeles county. Meanwhile, Uber and AirBnB are offering free services to residents impacted by the wildfires.

The Los Angeles Fire Department has ordered immediate evacuations in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood where the Sunset fire broke out, as numerous other fires continue to spread across the city. Firefighters from across the western states are aiding in the fight against the wildfires, with over 100,000 people under mandatory evacuations and as many as 1,500 structures destroyed. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed sympathy for those affected by the devastation and emphasized the hurricane-force winds combined with extremely dry conditions fueling the fires.

As firefighters struggle to contain the rapidly spreading wildfires, the water tanks supplying Pacific Palisades, one of the areas hardest hit, ran dry during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The intense demand for water in the region caused a depletion of the tanks, leading to a drastic lowering of water pressure. The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles continue to pose a threat to residents and officials are urging caution and preparedness in the face of the evolving situation.
