The 75th General Assembly’s 2025 session kicked off with opening ceremonies and festivities at the state Senate. The House Committee of Reps. and Senators traveled between chambers to let each other know they’re ready for business, with some friendly banter exchanged. In a historic moment, Esther van Mourik was unanimously elected as the new Senate secretary, becoming emotional as she took the oath of office in front of her son. Senator James Coleman was nominated for Senate President, with outgoing President Steve Fenberg passing him the gavel.
There was a fun moment when Senator Chris Kolker, who had just won re-election, was escorted by fellow senators back to the chamber after missing roll call. The day included the swearing-in of new senators and the children and grandchildren of senators leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Former presidents and politicians were also in attendance, with singers performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and dancers doing an interpretive dance on the Senate floor.
The day concluded with Tony Exum, Jr., a renowned musician and son of a senator, playing the National Anthem on a soprano saxophone, creating a poignant moment to start the new session. Overall, the opening day of the 75th General Assembly’s 2025 session was filled with tradition, laughter, and a sense of unity as lawmakers prepared for the work ahead.
