Press Release: Denver Extends Emergency Shelters Amid Frigid Temperatures
Denver’s Department of Housing Stability (HOST) has announced the extension of emergency shelters for the homeless until January 13, 2024, as the city braces for another week of below-freezing temperatures. Three shelters have been activated to provide warmth and refuge as temperatures are forecasted to remain significantly low.
The emergency cold weather shelters are located at the former Best Western hotel at 4595 Quebec St., and two city facilities at 2601 W. 7th Ave. and 375 S. Zuni St. Initially set to close on Monday, HOST decided to prolong operations amid ongoing cold winds and dangerous weather conditions. This season has already seen four shelter activations, emphasizing the city’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable residents.
Current efforts are part of Mayor Mike Johnston’s homeless housing initiative, and HOST outreach teams are actively working to connect with individuals living unsheltered. Katherine Wamsley, a spokesperson for HOST, highlighted that outreach coverage occurs during both day and evening hours, ensuring that support is accessible to those in need. Wamsley added that the teams coordinate with multiple agencies and utilize strategies like distribution of winter gear, including hats, gloves, and hand warmers.
For those seeking shelter, specific access points are designated for different homeless demographics, including men, women, youth, and families. Outreach assistance, including transportation to shelters, is also available for individuals unable to reach the designated locations on their own.
City officials stress that cold weather poses a serious threat to unsheltered individuals, making these emergency measures crucial for their safety. The Denver community is encouraged to support these initiatives and help spread the word to those in need.
