DENVER – While former President Jimmy Carter lies in repose in Georgia, Fritz Mayer, Dean of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, shares his cherished memories of the 39th president.
In an interview with Denver7, Mayer reminisced about first meeting Carter as a high school student in Georgia. At the time, Mayer and his peers were advocating for a state program aimed at educating students about government, drawing inspiration from a government study program in Washington, D.C. Mayer was designated spokesperson for their group, a responsibility he approached with nervous anticipation.
“What struck me was how he listened. There was no sense that we were wasting his time,” Mayer recalled. Carter’s genuine curiosity and engagement left a lasting impression on the young student and exemplified the president’s reputation for connecting with people.
Years later, Mayer encountered Carter again during Georgia Tech’s 100th anniversary celebration, where Carter was the keynote speaker.
